| | ITU TELECOM WORLD 2009 reflected new industry needs and realities |
|
 | Forging top-level strategies aimed at harnessing the power of technology to enhance our well-being was the focus of ITU TELECOM WORLD 2009, which was held from October 5 to 9.
More than 2,250 VIPs, including the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, heads of State and Government, ministers, ambassadors, heads of regulatory agencies and CEOs from around the world came together for a series of top-level roundtables, meetings and lively debates on the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in addressing many of the most pressing issues of our time, such as climate change, global economic recovery and cybersecurity.
Participants and delegates from 186 countries - almost the entire gamut of ITU’s 191 Member States - attended the event. 456 exhibitors from 49 countries, spanning just about every ICT domain, pre-sented the very latest innovations, from wireless solutions through satellite systems to low-cost broadband equipment.
Alongside major names and household brands were 35 national pavilions, including a range of the-matic pavilions centred on ICT solutions for e-health and empowering persons with disabilities.
The 2009 edition of ITU TELECOM WORLD unveiled new ways that ICTs can improve the global standard of living through healthcare, education and sustainability.
For the first time, Forum sessions were webcast live to a wide audience, allowing many more to share in the debate. They featured roundtables and interactive panel discussions that gave participants an opportunity to put forward their questions via a range of different formats.
More than 250 young people from 135 countries took part in the ITU TELECOM Youth Forum. They had opportunities to interact and develop mentor relationships with senior members of the ICT sector.
The ITU Secretary-General, Dr Hamadoun I. Touré, announced that the 40th anniversary of ITU Telecom World will be held in Geneva in 2011.
